Buna Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Donny Lee graduated high school in Redwater, located in Northeast Texas. He enrolled at Texarkana Community College for two years before transferring to Stephen F. Austin State University to major in Kinesiology and Special Education.
Dr. Lee began his educational career as a Special Education Resource teacher and football coach in Pine Tree ISD in Longview Texas. One year later, he married Leah; his wife of 19 years. He later taught and coached at Palestine Westwood and Bullard before becoming an assistant principal in 2009.
In 2014, Dr. Lee became the principal of Frankston High School and immediately began putting a team of dedicated educators together that dramatically improved student outcomes. His work was published in multiple educational journals and resulted in Dr. Lee receiving the 2017 TASSP High School Principal of the Year award.
Prior to arriving in Buna, Dr. Lee was the superintendent of Oakwood ISD, a Class 1A district in east Texas that was awarded the prestigious National Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence.
He is now completing his third year with Buna Independent School District as superintendent of schools. With a sharp focus on coaching teachers and principals, Dr. Lee believes that no matter a child’s situation, they deserve the opportunity to acquire a first-class education from first-class educators.
In addition, a high priority and laser focus has been given to facility needs, safety and security, technology, and staff salaries. Buna ISD is currently in the development stages of the Teacher Incentive Allotment in order to increase teacher salaries.
Lee received his Masters and Doctorate degrees from Lamar University and is also an Adjunct Professor for the Cardinals.
Dr. Lee enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, Abby (16) and Andi (11), golfing, fishing, and watching sports.
